The interlayer cations from bentonite clays can be changed by other cations in aqueous solution but do not change the crystalline structure. The cations exchange capacity is a fundamental property from clays since through this mechanism we can modify the chemical structure, their physicochemical properties, and technological applications. There are many conventional methods in order to determine the cations exchange capacity (CEC). Accordingly, the present work aims at studying the correlation among two cations exchange capacity (CEC) determination methods. The CEC determination was conducted through the methylene blue and critical micelle concentration. Five different types of clays were used in this process: Brasgel, Chocolate, Verde Lodo, Clorite Na+ and Bentonite RF. Based on the results of the correlation it was established that there is a high CEC among the clays used, besides that, this correlation is linear and direct. |
