Abstract
03-017 YOGENDRA PRASAD YADAVA GOMES, N.L.(Universidade Federal de Pernambuco); YADAVA, Y.P.(UNIVERSIDADE FEDERAL DE PERNAMBUCO); Ferreira, R.A.(Universidade Federal de Pernambuco); Ceramic composites have emerged as a promising class for aerospace applications because of their greater ability to withstand high temperatures and the requirement for lower air cooling in order to reduce fuel consumption and improve performance. But the intrinsic fragility of ceramics is still a limiting factor for the use of these materials in mechanical structures and industrial applications. To reduce this brittleness, increase the mechanical strength and the toughness to fracture, the ceramics are reinforced with incorporation of additives. Zirconium oxide (ZrO2), when incorporated with other oxides, can promote zirconia polycrystals with superior properties. This work aims to develop ceramic composites based on zirconia-alumina reinforced with a rare earth oxide (La2O3). have good mechanical and structural properties for application in aerospace turbines.
