One of the aspects of these changes is trend to eliminate calcium aluminate cements and replace it by different kinds of binders without calcium oxide. This work presents investigation of the phases from MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-H2O system as a potentially new cement free binder for alumina spinel castables.
Successful application of hydraulic binders in refractory materials, depend from understanding of processes and changes that occurs during setting, ageing and firing of the material. The aim of this work was to investigate effect of the hydrothermal treatment on the phase composition binder from MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-H2O phase system. The study mixtures were composed of chemically pure reactive aluminum, magnesium and silicon oxides. The mixtures after homogenization were subjected to hydrothermal synthesis at temperature 240°C under autogenously water vapor pressure. After synthesis, obtained samples were study by DTA-TG-EGA, XRD, FTIR analysis. Performed analysis revealed that during hydrothermal synthesis were obtained product similar it is nature to mixture of different hydroxides with gel products like MSH phase.
