The purpose of this project is the production of carbon foam, obtained trough carbonization of phenolic furan resin. In order to obtain this result, it was used diethylene glycol (DEG) and para-toluenesulfonic acid catalyst (APTS). DEG is responsible for giving porosity to resin pieces, which is essential to achieve complete molten metal infiltration in the carbon foam. As part of comparative analysis, various combinations with different resin, DEG and catalyst concentrations were made in order to determine how reagent ratio influences the final carbon porosity. After carbonization, some pieces were analyzed through scanning electronic microscope and data such as elemental composition and density were collected and compared with each other in order to determine the best carbon foam production composition. A correlation about DEG concentration and porosity of the the carbon foams were obtained, but the dispersion of the results is high masking some of its trend. |
