14-020 | William Fahrenholtz | Fahrenholtz, W.(Missouri University of Science and Technology); | Ultra-high temperature ceramics are a class of structural materials capable of withstanding extreme environments ranging from hypersonic flight and rocket propulsion to advanced nuclear reactors and lightweight armor. These ceramics are capable of withstanding extreme temperatures, heat fluxes, radiation levels, strain rates, chemical reactivities, or other conditions that are beyond the capabilities of existing materials. This presentation will review recent research on ultra-high temperature ceramics. The presentation will conclude with discussion of some future needs for research on boride and carbide ceramics. |
