The insertion of alumina into the silica framework, for instance, has been considered beneficial for many aspects. It may alter the acidity/basicity of the surface, increasing catalytic activity of such materials. Moreover, the addition of alumina has been said to strengthen the structure of mesopores against corrosion in the presence of water for example. In order to increase the existing knowledge about these materials, the addition of alumina into SBA-15 silicas was studied through the co-condensation method. Different precursors for aluminum were investigated and three different procedures for addition of silica and alumina sources were tested. The samples were characterized by nitrogen adsorption to observe their textural characteristics. The results obtained indicated the effect of the different precursors and procedures on the properties of the produced materials in terms of pore structure, surface area and pore size distribution. Based on the findings from this work, one will therefore be able to adjust the synthesis strategy towards producing the material with the desired properties for a specific application.
