07-001 | Enrique Sánchez | Mestre, S.(Universitat Jaume I); Sánchez, E.(Universitat Jaume I); | The Bologna plan was designed by the European Union to facilitate the recognition of university degrees between countries, and, as a consequence, the mobility of the graduates and the balance between the employment offer and the formed workforce. Before Bologna, the specialized education in ceramics in Spain was very scarce, in spite of being one of the world's leading producers of tiles. On one hand, there were specific ceramic studies at the high school level in some arts and crafts schools mainly located in Valencia, Madrid or Toledo provinces. On the other hand, there were some university degrees which included some subject related with ceramics. The exception was the 5-year chemical engineering’s degree in Jaume I University of Castellón which was oriented towards ceramic processing as a response to the industrial environment. After Bologna, a scheme of 4-years bachelor and 1-year master was defined by Spanish government. In addition, arts and crafts schools were allowed to offer a bachelor degree in ceramics, without being universities, which mixed artistic and technical subjects. The new scheme forced universities to offer generalist bachelors (chemistry, physics, chemical engineering, etc.), and reserve the specialization to the master. Only the Jaume I university implemented a master in ceramic technology.
The results of the educational reform were not as expected. On one hand, students of the ceramic bachelors offered by the arts and crafts schools must deal with the mix of artistic and technical subjects, despite they mainly have an artistic vocation and lack of basic STEM background. On the other hand, the ceramic industry around Castellón has not sufficiently valued the enhanced formation provided by the master degree. Thus, companies hire bachelors in chemical engineering or other related fields (chemistry, industrial engineering, etc.), and train them in the specific duties of their workplace.
